Program Overview

Although considered rare, inborn errors of metabolism may affect as many as 1:3000 births. Expanded newborn screening virtually guarantees that most pediatricians will begin to see cases in their practices. Outcomes vary dramatically depending on early identification and appropriate treatment. Using didactic and interactive formats with case discussion, this symposium will provide practical information and tools for pediatricians, including identifying IEMs in the pediatric setting, newborn screening and diagnostic testing, evidence-based approaches to coordinating management of patients with urea cycle disorder, and managing intercurrent pediatric illness to maintain stability and avoid hyperammonemic crises.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize potentially life-threatening inborn errors of metabolism in the pediatric setting.
  • Act swiftly—emergency intervention and further evaluation
  • Newborn Screening and diagnostic testing
  • Overview of urea cycle disorders for the office and emergency settings.
  • Critical triggers for instability—diet, viruses, vaccines, medications
